They come with many experiences and accomplishments including public health, EMS, wilderness medicine, sports, languages, critical care, public policy, finance, international health, basic science, medical education, and the arts. Kitan Akinosho, MD

Marc Blatt, MD, MBA

Fun Facts/ Interesting past life: I am originally from the Washington, D.C. area and went to the University of Virginia for undergrad (wahoowa) where I worked as an Advanced EMT. I came very close to visiting all 30 Major League Baseball stadiums before the age of 18. When not working, I am either thinking of food, talking about food, eating food, or watching a food-themed show (huge Gordon Ramsey fan).
Why did you choose BIDMC? This program checked every single one of my boxes. The sense of community and camaraderie was palpable on interview day. There is an incredible diversity of training environments and practice styles. I was also very impressed by the list of fellowship offerings and was specifically attracted to the flexibility the 3+1 format provides - I hope to blend my interests in prehospital medicine and administration.

Lawson Enokekwa, MD

Fun Facts/ Interesting past life: During my senior year at the University of Georgia, I was the Stroll Master of my Fraternity – Alpha Phi Alpha – and helped us win Best Fraternity Stroll at our yearly Homecoming stroll-off. I’ve also mastered the art of playing video games while riding a stationary bike, allowing me to get some serious cardio in while enjoying one of my favorite pastimes.
Why did you choose BIDMC? I chose BIDMC because of the welcoming spirit I felt during my away rotation and subsequent interview. Everyone’s passion for medical education and patient care was apparent from day one, and the perks of the program, including it’s 3+1 format, variety of community training sites, and academic focus, were hard to pass up!

Kristen Hayden, MD

Fun Facts/ Interesting past life: I’ve lived in 5 states and identify as a Californian. Past life: hostess at a BBQ joint, milkshake craftswoman at Sonic, professional cat cuddler (I’m a dog person but don’t tell my boss that), musician, CPR instructor, EMT. I love playing French horn and plan on joining a local orchestra during residency.
Why did you choose BIDMC? I wanted to go to a program in a larger city and Boston is the perfect size with lots of places to explore and a fantastic music scene. I felt like this was a program where I would get the support I need to become the best physician possible. Track record with job and fellowship placement is excellent.

Jennifer Hsueh, MD

Fun Facts/ Interesting past life: In another life, I’ve been a polling officer, a meerkat researcher, a project leader for a human rights initiative studying health access of incarcerated women in Lebanon. Currently, I’m just a humble cat lady and aspiring plant mom.
Why did you choose BIDMC? I’ve been working my way across the country from California to Chicago, and now to Boston! My mentors always told me that when you’ve found the right program, you just know. I didn’t believe them until I interviewed here and knew that I’d found my family that would both push me and support my growth in a busy, tight-knit ED. I’m also excited to fly with MedFlight and work with the Fenway crew. Plus, no one can beat the lobster rolls, cannolis, and summer evening Red Sox games.

Navya Kanderi, MD

Fun Facts/ Interesting past life: No one ever believes me but I’m a black belt in karate. I grew up in Virginia Beach and am very much a warm and water gal so Boston is my worst nightmare. Also, I love literally anything that involves buffalo chicken.
Why did you choose BIDMC? The opportunities here are incredible from event medicine to teaching opportunities to the unique 3 + 1 option. I felt that this program was the best fit for me and tailored the most to my goals. The training is phenomenal and my interview day for this program was by far my favorite.

Ryan Pappal, MD

Fun Facts/ Interesting past life: Grew up in Texas, so I’m currently doomsday prepping for my first ever Boston winter… When I’m not working, I love producing amateur EDM music while integrating electric guitar into my tracks. Otherwise, I enjoy trying new cocktail bars (and trying to steal recipes), and walking — and still training — our pup Emma throughout Boston.
Why did you choose BIDMC? I’ve always had a mysterious draw to the Northeast and wanted to experience urban life up here in a big city. Boston certainly doesn’t disappoint. BIDMC’s 3+1 format was virtually unmatched, the training environment is fast-paced and challenging, and I felt like I vibed well with everyone on interview day!

Jordan Rudman, MD

Fun Facts/ Interesting past life: I’m a huge music nerd; I play jazz piano and have been a singer in ~20 choirs. I also collect jazz records from the 1950s-60s. Prior to med school I worked as a freelance musician, choral/theater accompanist, bartender, server, EMT, and CPR instructor.

Amanda Scudder, MD

Fun Facts/ Interesting past life: I grew up on a farm in central Massachusetts with over fifty sheep, as well as chickens and goats! I also grew up competitively figure skating and continued it through college at BC. Lastly, during medical school I co-founded a plant business with one of my best friends!
Why did you choose BIDMC? I loved everything about BIDMC and the EM team - it felt like a perfect fit. I was fortunate to have worked here as part of the clinical research team during undergrad, and then as a fourth year sub-intern during medical school - both of which were such amazing experiences. The people that make up the BIDMC Emergency Department are one of a kind, and the culture in the Department really stood out to me. I thoroughly enjoyed working with the patient population, for their diverse demographics and pathologies, and was drawn to the range of clinical sites and three plus one curriculum option. Plus, Boston is home for me and I knew it would be a happy place to spend these next few years!

Jessica Ward, MD

Fun Facts/ Interesting past life: I used to be a Marine Inspector in the US Coast Guard, inspecting ships of all shapes and sizes both in the US and abroad. For fun I love to travel and have my pilot’s license.
Why did you choose BIDMC? The 3+1 is awesome. The residency is fast paced with attendings who work hard to train you while giving you autonomy. I also wanted to live in Boston, it’s always been a great city every time I’ve visited (even in the Winter).

Laura Wylie, MD

Why did you choose BIDMC? I loved my interview day here and felt like this program was the perfect fit to train me well clinically while incorporating new techniques and research to my practice. Also the residents seemed like such a fun, tight knit group that I could see myself fitting in with!

Alyson Yee, MD, PhD

Fun Facts/ Interesting past life: I spent a year after college doing cheese microbiology research in France! Eventually I decided I cared more about microbes as they relate to human health (although I still eat plenty of cheese recreationally) — I went on to complete a PhD in microbiology focusing on the human microbiome in early life. Outside of science and medicine, I love running, climbing, and visiting museums.
Why did you choose BIDMC? I met incredible people on my interview day! I was really excited about the quality and diversity of clinical experiences, breadth of research opportunities, and the 3+1 format. As a bonus, my partner and I have both lived in Boston before and have friends and family nearby.

Lincoln Zernicke, MD

Fun Facts/ Interesting past life: I grew up in Natick, Massachusetts, and I have lived in Boston for the last 6 years! I was an EMT for four years at Fordham University spending lots of time in various Bronx emergency rooms. When I am not in the Emergency Department I am either spending time with my friends, playing basketball, or watching the Green Bay Packers!
Why did you choose BIDMC? Having been born and raised in the greater Boston area I was excited to serve my home community. From an academic and curriculum point of view I was thrilled about the number of different sites the program offers allowing for a variety of patient populations and training environments. Of course the 3+1 curriculum is also an incredible opportunity. Having rotated here as a medical student I had an amazing experience. I was able to experience first hand how friendly, and welcoming everyone at BIDMC was and it felt like a perfect fit.

Taylor Brown, MD

Fun Facts/ Interesting past life: I love the outdoors in New England. It's one of the few places where you can hike, ski, and surf. I try to spend as much of my free time outdoors.
Why did you choose BIDMC? After completing my clerkships at BIDMC as a medical student, I knew I never wanted to leave. I've rotated through just about every service at BI, and I've genuinely loved my time here. I also chose BIDMC for the clinical training. The combination of a 3-year, academic program, with a multitude of clinical training sites and fellowship offerings fit my career goals.

Ethan Burke, MD

Fun Facts/ Interesting past life: In a past life, I was an environmental educator (which included living and traveling on a vegetable oil-powered bus and living in California) and I was a teacher in Boston Public Schools. When I’m not working, you’ll find me exploring Boston and New England with my fiancé, playing my lap slide guitar, or surfing in Nicaragua.
Why did you choose BIDMC? I chose BIDMC because of the program’s emphasis on improving clinical operations, the excellent community sites, strong mentorship/leadership development, and the many impressive yet down-to-earth residents and attendings at BI. I also love Boston. I started my medical career as a Research Assistant in the ED at BIDMC and am grateful to be back!

Maria Cebula, MD

Fun Facts/ Interesting past life: I’m originally from Southern CA but have officially converted to a Northeasterner. I am such a baked goods person! I bought my first Kitchen Aid and have been going crazy. I plan to feature a few of my favorite cookie recipes at one of the local farmers markets in Boston this year! I am obsessed with my cat and chose an apartment that she would enjoy, with a porch for her cat tree and I’m not ashamed.
Why did you choose BIDMC? I chose BIDMC because I had such a good feeling after my interview day. I had a lot of fun chatting with all of my interviewers and could tell there was a genuine sense of community amongst the faculty and residents. I liked that there is a variety of ED’s that you have the opportunity to rotate at so you get a wide range of patients, staff, and educators to formulate what type of physician I want to become. There are so many opportunities to explore my interests and find my exact clinical niche. I was also very excited to move to Boston!

Joseph Colucci, MD

Fun Facts/ Interesting past life: Whenever I'm not at the hospital, I train circus acrobatics at some of the circus schools around Boston! I’ve performed partner acrobatics and hand-to-hand around the Boston area for the last few years, and I’m planning to continue training as much as possible throughout residency!
Why did you choose BIDMC? I was already in Boston for medical school, and have really enjoyed the city and have great friends here, so was really hoping to stick around for residency. I also knew that I wanted to pursue a palliative care fellowship after residency, and the 3+1 program offers a great opportunity to do that within the BI system. On top of all that, I had a great experience on interview day, and had heard fantastic things about all the residents and faculty here!

Nadia Eshraghi, MD

Fun Facts/ Interesting past life: Originally from Burlington, MA & went to undergrad at UCLA (Go Bruins!). I play classical piano, and recently picked up ukulele. I love traveling and trying new restaurants/food. I am a mediocre tennis player, and received the grunting award my senior year of high school for being overly vocal on the court.
Why did you choose BIDMC? I chose BIDMC because of the variety in clinical experiences offered throughout the 3 years of training, as well as the incredible faculty and residents who make the program so unique and special. Also, Boston is and always will be my favorite city despite the unpredictable weather and aggressive drivers (myself included).

Natalie Jansen, MD

Fun Facts/ Interesting past life: I did a PhD in sociology before medical school, and I studied women’s and children’s health in the US, Mozambique, and Indonesia. I love statistics and reading non-fiction, which are only made better when I get to sit in a coffee shop with fancy coffee and a delicious donut - which of course gets posted on my donut Instagram. I offset the massive donut intake by running, biking, and playing with my ham of a dog, Daisy.
Why did you choose BIDMC? I loved BIDMC on my interview day! I chose BIDMC because I really appreciated the exposure to different clinical environments, the world-class faculty with whom I get to train, the opportunities to tailor my training to my own interests with the 3+1 model, and the amazing residents with whom I interacted. As a lifelong Midwesterner, I was also drawn to the mountains and ocean, which are both (gasp!) driving distance.

Gordon MacDougall, MD

Fun Facts/ Interesting past life: I am originally from the Washington, D.C. area, but spent college and medical school in the Midwest. Before medical school I worked as a middle school science teacher and school bus driver as part of a volunteer program in Oglala Lakota County, South Dakota.
Why did you choose BIDMC? BIDMC has an excellent combination of clinical acuity and variety with an academic focus and faculty committed to teaching and mentoring residents. On the interview day I found the faculty to be welcoming, approachable, and clearly interested in training residents to be well-prepared emergency medicine physicians and colleagues at BIDMC and going forward in their careers. The residents were likewise a friendly and tight-knit group who I could see myself working with on a daily basis.

Alyssa Mangino, MD

Fun Facts/ Interesting past life: Long Island native but went to University of Florida for undergrad (go gata!). I went reverse bungee jumping in Peru. I enjoy anything that involves water and sun. I’m oddly proficient at building Ikea furniture and baking anything that comes in a box.
Why did you choose BIDMC? I chose BIDMC because of its robust clinical training, vast community exposure, leadership development and unmatched faculty support. The residents I met during my interview day were all down-to-earth yet incredibly talented and hardworking. Also, Boston is a dream city. The choice was a no-brainer for me.

Kory Markel, MD

Fun Facts/ Interesting past life: I am a former whitewater rafting guide and met my amazing wife while she was a backpacking guide in Colorado. Together we paddle big rivers, climb tall rocks, and run pretty trails as often as we can. I’m also a Spikeball Ambassador and host tournaments on the regular. My wife and I spent a month rafting the Grand Canyon with 14 of our friends, the car was packed and we drove to Arizona directly from our Match Day ceremony M4.
Why did you choose BIDMC? Top tier clinical training combined with unbelievable opportunities to pursue Emergency Medicine adjacent interests. The people are so happy, smart, and fun. We had never been to the Northeast but Boston seems like a great city and we are excited to explore all that this part of the country has to offer.

Colleen McGrail, MD

Fun Facts/ Interesting past life: I started sailing when I was seven years old and taught sailing for ten years on the Cape. I also sailed competitively in college and still try to get out on the water as much as I can. When I’m not in the ED, you’ll probably find me on the Cape with my husband Tim, our golden retriever, and our families.
Why did you choose BIDMC? I loved my interview day at BIDMC, and I could tell that each person I met was very down to earth, but also a top-notch clinician with unique clinical interests. I was drawn to the diverse training environments, the 3+1 program, the world-class teaching, and the multitude of opportunities to explore my own interests within EM. I loved being in Boston for medical school and was thrilled to have matched at BI!

Alexander Steele, MD

Fun Facts/ Interesting past life: Before medical school I worked in a lab that studies prion disease, as an EMT, and as a barista. I also lived in Quito, Ecuador for a time. In the future, I look forward to becoming the best doctor I can and getting a puppy with my significant other!
Why did you choose BIDMC? It was very important to me to choose a program where I would be able to care for a diverse patient population with a wide array of clinical pathologies and needs. I also wished to find a program that would push me out of my comfort zone and challenge me to grow as a human being. BIDMC is a program that does both of these things very well and also provides world class clinical training in a 3+1 academic format.

Jani Swiatek, MD

Fun Facts/ Interesting past life: Before starting medical school, I worked for a year with AmeriCorps in Boston in a Certified Nursing Assistant training program with adult students from all over the world. I loved meeting them, learning about their cultures, and helping them prepare for their CNA exams! In my free time I love playing basketball and tennis, traveling, doing my own clothing alterations, and baking!
Why did you choose BIDMC? I chose BI because I felt like the program had everything that I wanted—a variety of clinical sites, high volume/high acuity, faculty dedicated to teaching, super happy and fun residents, and it is in Boston (my absolute favorite city). I also loved that I would get exposed to accomplished mentors with a variety of interests to help me narrow down my list of things that I might want to pursue for fellowships.

Kat Tang, MD

Fun Facts/ Interesting past life: I am a former college soccer goalkeeper (and was the shortest goalkeeper in my league) and avid Liverpool FC supporter ever since training at their facilities during my teen years. I have worked as an EMT for 6 years in both the greater Boston area and upstate New York. I started doing yoga while in medical school and absolutely love it, despite being the least flexible person in every class. As a child, I grew up with 7 cats and 3 dogs, so I like to think I can get along well with both cat and dog people!
Why did you choose BIDMC? Even though it was over Zoom, I left my interview day with warm fuzzy feelings after talking to all the impressive and kind faculty. I especially found the flexible 3+1 program unique and indicative that the program works hard to make sure the professional needs of each resident are addressed throughout their training. It also helps that my husband’s current job is based in Boston, and it is one of our favorite cities in the US.

David Appelbaum, MD

Fun Facts/ Interesting past life: I took a year off from undergrad to work at a Greyhound dog rescue shelter and ended up adopting two dogs. I love spending my free time in the outdoors. On my days off you can often find me hiking or during the winter hitting the slopes with Jesse.
Why did you choose BIDMC? On top of being located in the best city in the world, the people at BIDMC were a major draw. On interview day residents and program leadership were welcoming and the quality of BI’s training was clear. Why did you choose BIDMC? BIDMC was one of my last interviews and one of three in one week. I was so exhausted from interview season by that point but during my interview day at BIDMC I felt that same excitement and interest I had felt very early on in interview season when things were new and fresh. Fun Facts/ Interesting past life: In a past life, I was a paramedic that played guitar a lot. Currently, my favorite hobbies are road cycling and cooking new recipes. Why did you choose BIDMC? I rotated at BIDMC as a visiting medical student, and I was impressed by the culture in the emergency department. This is a place dedicated to education, patient care, camaraderie, professionalism, and inclusion. Throughout my rotation, I had a gut feeling that BIDMC was the right place for me. The training strikes the perfect balance between autonomy and support. The people are friendly and respectful. The residents become confident in managing critical patients and managing patient flow. The overall acuity is high, and the patient presentations are often complex. The relationship with the nursing staff is fantastic. As someone who is strongly considering a fellowship, the 3+1 format is perfect.

Why did you choose BIDMC? I went to undergrad in Boston and worked as an EMT in Boston before medical school, so it seemed fitting to train in the location where my first exposure and interest in emergency medicine started. I got a great "gut feeling" from the residents when I visited. I am excited to train at a diverse group of hospitals throughout the Boston area. It doesn't hurt that my wife works next door at Boston Children's Hospital.

Jesse Schacht, MD

Fun Facts/ Interesting past life: I am a former Medical Laboratory Scientist and worked in the blood bank at BIDMC during the 2013 Boston Marathon Bombing. I love music and guitar, and was determined to become a professional musician before pursuing a career in the laboratory. I enjoy craft beers, trying new foods, petting my two cats, and hanging out with people named Jesse.
Why BIDMC? The program leadership, faculty, and staff I met during my interview were welcoming and understood the needs and concerns of their residents. All the residents I interacted with during my interview were down to earth and shared a sense of camaraderie. The curriculum is well designed with ample resources and mentorship available to explore any professional curiosity/niche. The numerous affiliated sites that the residents rotate through provide great examples of various practice environments. Both my wife and I were thrilled at the possibility of training in Boston and remaining close to friends and family. The sushi at the interview dinner didn’t hurt either!
