Clinical Assessment of Efficacy of Cognitive Remediation in Patients with Schizophrenia or Schizoaffective Disorder Stabilized on Lurasidone

Study Overview

This is a study for people with a diagnosis of Schizophrenia or Schizoaffective disorder taking Lurasidine (Latuda) to see if computer based exercises can improve memory, thinking, and problem solving. Lurasidone is a new FDA-approved antipsychotic medication with relatively less side effects such as weight gain or excessive sleep. Cognitive Remediation Therapy involves computer-based mental exercises. It helps to improve memory, thinking, and problem solving. In this study, half of the people will be assigned to cognitive remediation and a group meeting to help apply what you have learned to your everyday life. The other half will play computer games and attend group on health and wellness. This study is funded to take place at 20 university and research sites, across the United States.

What will happen during the study
The study will take place over a 6-8 month period and will include:

  • Screening (interview, physical exam and tests) to determine if you are eligible to take part in this study
  • Initial set of assessments (baseline)
  • 6 visits in 8 weeks to monitor you after starting Lurasidone
  • MRI & Electroencephalogram (EEG) 2 times during the study
  • Two 75-minute sessions per week for up to 6 months of either Cognitive Remediation or computer based mental exercises (like computer games or puzzles). You have an equal chance of being in either of the groups.

During this phase, your symptoms and side effects will be assessed at least monthly by a psychiatrist.

Who can participate?

To participate in the study individuals must meet the following criteria:

  • Age between 18 and 55 years
  • Diagnosis of schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder for more than one year
  • Currently being treated with Lurasidone, or willing to change antipsychotic medication to Lurasidone because of continuing symptoms or unfavorable side effects
  • NO current substance use disorder

This study takes place at the Massachusetts Mental Health. Individuals will be compensated up to $650 for completing the study. There is no charge for any test.
