About the HAEMR Program
The HAEMR Program at BIDMC
The Harvard Affiliated Emergency Medicine Residency (HAEMR) at BIDMC is a three-year residency program centered at our Level I trauma center. Throughout the program, residents will be able to rotate at numerous Massachusetts hospitals and take part in academic opportunities at Harvard Medical School, Harvard teaching hospitals, and Harvard School of Public Health. PGY1, PGY2, and PGY3 residents will be trained by our faculty in various disciplines of emergency medicine:
- Airway Management
- Prehospital Care
- Basic Science Research
- Disaster Medicine
- International Emergency Medicine
During the clinical experience, residents are closely supervised and given graded responsibility for patient care and ultimately for patient flow in the ED. Additionally, residents are taught how to supervise medical students and other residents and how to teach the practice of Emergency Medicine. Residents teach medical students and prehospital personnel and contribute to the didactic program. Senior residents take on the responsibility of supervising junior residents in the clinical arena.
Residents also develop the research and academic skills required for a career in academic Emergency Medicine. Participation in research is promoted through a system of mentorship, journal club participation, and a didactic program that teaches research design and statistical methods.
All applications must be complete and on file as of December 15 of the year preceding the July entry into the program. Interviews are by appointment only. The BIDMC Harvard Affiliated Emergency Medicine Residency participates in the National Resident Matching Program. Applicants are required to complete their application agreement form in time for the match.
